We often get enquiries about how, when and where to start a business.

In today’s economic world jobs are difficult to come by and experience is almost always a non-negotiable requirement for placement.

Where do you start?

Our advice is simple. You must remember that almost 80% of start-up businesses fail!

That is a frightening statistic! It would almost put any entrepreneur off completely!

But, if you are clever, and plan properly; there is nothing more satisfying than starting your own business and watching it grow year by year.

There are some important golden rules to follow if you want to start a business and be a successful entrepreneur.

Firstly, you must have a business plan. It should be drawn up in writing; and certainly can be amended from time to time as your learning curve continues. It is your starting point and you will refer back to it often. It is the foundation of any business.

Secondly, you must identify what it is that you want to do. Eg to start a plumber’s business. You must be qualified to do what you intend to do. I.e. in our example you must be a plumber.

Thirdly, you should have at least some experience in the field. I.e. some plumbing experience. Although experience is NOT essential; if you start a business without it; you will need to be a quick and eager learner; and try and learn as much about the practical aspects of your business both before you commence business and as the business grows.

Fourthly, you must know your target market and identify them clearly. i.e. who are my customers going to be?

Next, you must choose and suitable area/site to run your business from. It is preferable to start off small; unless you have considerable financial backing. Even a garage or small office at home will do.

Lastly you must know who and what your competitors are? There is no point opening a small plumbing business in a small town of 5000 people when there are already 3 plumbing firms in the same town who have been around for many tears and have cornered the available market.
